Non-Communicable Diseases Unit
Currently, chronic Non-Communicable diseases (NCD) as the dominant health problem and are now leading course of mortality and mobility in Sri Lanka as well in Matara district. Cardiovascular diseases (including coronary heart disease, cerebra vascular diseases and hypertension), diabetes mellitus chronic respiratory diseases, chronic renal diseases and cancers are main chronic NCDs and have a significant disease burden in Matara district.
Smoking, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and air pollution are main risk factors for chronic Non-Communicable diseases and aging of the population, urbanization and lifestyle changes are other contributory factors.
As the district focal point, Non-Communicable diseases unit, RDHS office Matara has been empowered with all modern facilities to prevent and control chronic as well acute Non- Communicable diseases in Matara district.
